Saw "Watchmen" a couple of days ago. As a fan of the book I was skeptical about how faithful the movie could be. There's just so much in it. Well, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by how good the movie is. While I wish they had done some things differently, (the pornographic attention to gore being my biggest objection) overall I think it's an excellent adaptation and I plan on seeing it again today. If you haven't read the book you should. I'm not really that into comics, but "Watchmen" is amazing. I've never read anything else like it. As for music, lately I've been on a black metal kick. If anyone's not familiar this scene, you should know that it's completely deranged. The bands all think they're making some kind of serious artistic statement about how awful Christianity is blah blah blah. The whole scene began back in the early 90s in Norway with bands like Mayhem, Emperor, Satyricon, Immortal and a handful of others. They gained worldwide notoriety when some folks in the scene burned a number of churches as part of their war on the Christian religion. More recently, Gaahl, the frontman for the band Gorgoroth, served nine months in a Norwegian jail for holding a man prisoner and torturing him. The court accused Gaahl of collecting the man's blood in a glass with intention of drinking it or forcing the victim to drink it. Gaahl claims he just wanted to stop his carpet from getting stained. The ideology of the scene involves crackpot Nietzcheanism mixed with Satanism and/or Nordic paganism. It's all about how elite Satanists or pagans will conquer the weak Christian sheep. Musically, songs tend to be played at hyper-fast speed accompanied by shrieking vocals. Often there are no guitar solos and the bass guitar is barely audible. The musicians perform wearing corpse paint and lots of metal-spiked armbands. Here's a picture of the aforementioned Gaahl, who Terrorizer magazine has called the most evil man on earth. Bloodthirsty vampire or meticulous carpet cleaner? Anyone deranged enough to be interested in this sort of thing should go to youtube and search for "black metal documentary" to watch a creepy interview with this guy. Most of these bands just seem ridiculous, but I find Gaahl to be genuinely disturbing. Here's a pic from a particularly blasphemous show in Krakow, Poland. Oh, and by the way, the sheep heads are real.
